A device that compresses a pulse of ions in time, so that the ions reach a chosen point, usually the sample surface in a pulsed primary ion beam, within a shorter interval. It works by slowing the leading ions or speeding up the trailing ones. It performs the pulse compression described by the related term beam bunching.
