Captodative effect
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001612
The stabilization of a carbon-centered radical by the combined action of an electron-withdrawing substituent, the captor, and an electron-donating substituent, the dative, both attached to the radical carbon. The effect is described as a synergistic delocalization of the unpaired electron, as in radicals bearing both a cyano or ester group and an amino or alkoxy group. The label is also applied to some unsaturated compounds that carry both kinds of substituent.
