Cardiotoxic

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001673

Describing a substance or agent that exerts a poisonous or damaging effect on the heart, leading to cardiac muscle dysfunction or electrophysiological disturbances. The resulting cardiotoxicity can manifest as arrhythmias, cardiomyopathy, or heart failure. Certain anticancer drugs, such as anthracyclines (for example, doxorubicin), are well-known for their dose-dependent cardiotoxic side effects, which require careful monitoring of cardiac function during treatment.
