Carrier atom
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001680
A reaction participant, named in the IUPAC system for symbolic representation of reaction mechanisms, that is neither a core atom, the primary reference atom of the mechanistic change, nor a peripheral atom, a secondary reference atom that ends up inside the same molecule as the core atom. A carrier atom shuttles groups onto and off that molecule without itself becoming covalently attached to it.
