Centrifugal barrier

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001796

A potential energy barrier arising from the angular momentum of colliding particles in a chemical reaction. This barrier impedes the approach of reactants, particularly at low collision energies, by effectively increasing the repulsive forces between them. It is a component of the overall potential energy surface that must be overcome for a reaction to proceed.
