Ceramic precursor
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012960
A compound or material, frequently a polymer, that transforms into a ceramic upon thermal treatment. This transformation involves pyrolysis, where the precursor is heated in an inert or reactive atmosphere, causing the decomposition of organic components and the formation of an inorganic, amorphous or crystalline ceramic network. Common examples include organosilicon polymers like polycarbosilanes and polysilazanes, which yield silicon carbide (SiC) and silicon nitride (Si3N4) ceramics, respectively.
