Mixed ceramic

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007421

A ceramic in which two or more phases, each an oxide, nitride or carbide of a metal, form co-continuous, interpenetrating networks. Every phase is connected throughout the solid, so the structure is a mutual network rather than one phase dispersed in another. It differs from a ceramic matrix composite, in which discrete fibres, whiskers or particles sit inside a continuous ceramic matrix.
