Chaperon
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001875
A species that enables two atoms or radicals to combine into a molecule, or the reverse dissociation, by taking up the excess energy released on bond formation or supplying the energy needed for bond rupture. Without such a partner the freshly formed molecule would redissociate at once, so gas-phase atom recombinations are termolecular in the low-pressure limit. It is a particular kind of third body, usually an inert gas atom or molecule.
