Charring

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001924

The pyrolysis of a sample that contains organic matter, converting it to a carbonaceous residue before the analyte is measured, as in the pretreatment stage of an electrothermal atomization program. When oxygen is present the same step is called ashing. Charring sits between the drying and atomization stages of a furnace temperature program, with its own temperature and hold time.
