Charging potential
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001923
The electrical potential that develops on the surface of an insulating or poorly conducting sample when exposed to an electron or ion beam. This phenomenon occurs because the rate of incoming charge from the beam does not perfectly balance the rate of outgoing charge from secondary emission or conduction. It can significantly affect the kinetic energy measurements of emitted electrons in surface analysis techniques.
