Ashing
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000832
A sample preparation procedure for decomposing the organic matrix of a sample to preconcentrate non-volatile inorganic analytes for subsequent analysis. In dry ashing, the sample is heated to high temperatures, between 400 and 700 °C, in a muffle furnace in the presence of air or oxygen. Wet ashing involves treating the sample with strong oxidizing acids, such as nitric acid or perchloric acid, and heat to destroy the organic matter.
