Ciliary muscle

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002075

A ring of smooth muscle located within the eye's ciliary body, responsible for changing the shape of the lens. Contraction and relaxation of this muscle alter the tension on the suspensory ligaments, thereby adjusting the lens's curvature for focusing on objects at different distances. This process is known as accommodation and is controlled by the parasympathetic nervous system.
