Clay hybrid
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002108
A composite material where an inorganic clay component is dispersed within an organic polymer matrix at a nanoscopic or molecular level. The clay, such as montmorillonite, is modified to be compatible with the polymer, leading to either intercalated structures where polymer chains enter the clay galleries, or exfoliated structures where individual clay layers are separated. These materials are distinct from simple clay-filled polymers, which are microcomposites with larger, aggregated particles.
