Cochlea
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002164
A spiral-shaped, fluid-filled cavity within the inner ear responsible for converting sound vibrations into nerve impulses. Sound waves cause vibrations in the cochlear fluid, which in turn stimulate specialized sensory hair cells within the organ of Corti. Ototoxic chemicals can damage these hair cells, leading to sensorineural hearing loss, which is typically irreversible and measured by audiometry.
