Collimation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002213

The process of restricting a beam of particles or electromagnetic radiation so that its rays are nearly parallel, minimizing divergence. This is achieved by using a system of apertures, slits, or lenses to block particles or waves that are not traveling in the desired direction. In nuclear analytical techniques, collimators made of lead or other dense materials are used to define the geometry and direction of the radiation beam reaching the detector.
