Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002737
A solvent extraction step in which an impurity held in the extract phase is pushed back into the aqueous phase by contacting the extract with a solution of the main extractable solute. The main solute must be extracted more strongly than the impurities, as shown by a higher distribution ratio, but it need not be pure. It is a form of scrubbing in which the product itself, rather than a separate reagent, displaces the contaminant.
