Desensitization

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013032

A reduction in the responsiveness of a biological system to a continuous or repeated stimulus. This can occur at the cellular level, where receptors become less sensitive to their ligands, or at the organismal level, such as a decrease in allergic reactions after repeated exposure to an allergen. The process often involves changes in receptor number, affinity, or signaling pathway components.
