Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003691

A chemical compound that produces an electrically conductive solution when dissolved in a polar solvent, such as water. The substance ionizes or dissociates in the solvent, creating mobile ions that can carry an electric current. Strong electrolytes, like sodium chloride, dissociate completely into their constituent ions, whereas weak electrolytes, such as acetic acid, only partially dissociate, resulting in a lower concentration of free ions and lower conductivity.
