Energy edge

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003921

The backscattering energy of ions scattered from atoms of a given element or isotope at the sample surface in ion beam analysis such as Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, seen as the high-energy edge of that element's signal in the spectrum. Its value equals the kinematic factor of the collision times the incident energy, so it identifies the mass of the scattering atom. Atoms below the surface appear at lower energies because the projectile loses energy on the way in and out.
