Excipient

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004178

An inactive substance formulated alongside the active pharmaceutical ingredient in a medicinal product. It serves to facilitate drug absorption, improve stability, bulk up solid formulations, or enhance palatability, with examples including fillers, binders, disintegrants, and colorants. Unlike the active ingredient, an excipient is intended to be pharmacologically inert at the dose administered, although some can have known effects in sensitive individuals.
