Exergonic reaction
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004204
A chemical reaction characterized by a negative overall standard Gibbs free energy change (ΔG° < 0). Such a reaction proceeds spontaneously in the forward direction under standard conditions, releasing energy that can be used to perform work. It is distinguished from an exothermic reaction, which is defined by a negative enthalpy change (ΔH < 0), although the two properties frequently coincide.
