Floor temperature
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004488
The temperature below which a chain polymerization stops giving high-molar-mass polymer, because the free energy of polymerization becomes positive. It exists only for entropy-driven polymerizations, where the enthalpy and entropy changes per mole of monomer are both positive, and for 1 mol/L monomer it equals their ratio. Ring-opening polymerizations of cyclic sulfur (S8) and of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane are examples, and the value rises as the initial monomer concentration is lowered.
