Free-draining
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004660
A descriptor of a dissolved macromolecule through whose coil solvent flows undisturbed, which corresponds to the limit of zero hydrodynamic interaction between segments. Each segment then meets friction independently of the others, as in the Rouse bead-spring model. The limit is approached by short chains with few segments, whereas long coils in dilute solution behave as non-draining and are described by the Zimm model, which includes hydrodynamic interaction.
