Freely draining
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004661
A descriptor of a chain macromolecule whose segments exert so little friction on the solvent that the flow near one segment is unaffected by the others, so solvent moves almost freely through the coil. Its hydrodynamic behaviour then resembles that of independent beads. The condition is met by short chains, whereas long flexible chains in dilute solution behave as non-draining coils, with the solvent inside the coil moving along with it.
