Free ion activity model

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004655

A conceptual framework in ecotoxicology that posits the toxicity of metals to aquatic organisms is primarily determined by the activity of the free metal ion in solution, rather than the total metal concentration. This model accounts for the complexation of metals by ligands in the environment, which can reduce the bioavailability and thus the toxicity of the metal. It is often used to predict the ecotoxicological effects of metals in natural waters.
