Free ion
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004654
An ion that exists independently in a solution or gas phase, not associated with a counterion to form an ion pair or larger aggregate. In polymerization, free ions are highly reactive species that can initiate or propagate chain growth. Their concentration is influenced by solvent polarity and temperature.
