Ion-pair formation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006144
An ionization event in mass spectrometry in which one molecule yields both a cationic and an anionic fragment, so ions of each polarity appear among the products. In solution chemistry the same words describe the association of a free cation and anion into a single unit held by Coulombic attraction, which lowers the free-ion concentration and so the conductivity of the solution.
