Acid-volatile sulfide
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000144
The fraction of sulfide in a sediment or soil sample that is released as hydrogen sulfide gas upon treatment with a cold mineral acid. This fraction consists primarily of amorphous iron monosulfides, such as mackinawite (FeS), and is used as an indicator of the potential for metal sulfide precipitation. The ratio of simultaneously extracted metals to acid-volatile sulfide is used to predict the bioavailability and toxicity of certain heavy metals in anaerobic sediments.
