Graphite whiskers

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013137

Slender filaments of nearly cylindrical shape built from graphene sheets rolled into a scroll about the filament axis, with at least partial graphite-like stacking between turns. Along the axis their stiffness and strength come close to those of the graphite lattice. They were first grown in a high-pressure carbon arc discharge in 1960.
