Ground level inversion

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005035

An atmospheric condition where a layer of warmer air rests above a layer of cooler air at or very near the Earth's surface. This temperature inversion traps pollutants close to the ground, preventing their vertical dispersion. Such inversions often form on clear, calm nights due to radiative cooling of the surface.
