Hematemesis

The vomiting of blood, indicating bleeding in the upper gastrointestinal tract. The appearance of the vomited blood can range from bright red, suggesting fresh bleeding, to dark brown or black, resembling coffee grounds, which indicates older blood that has been exposed to stomach acid. This condition requires immediate medical evaluation to identify the source and severity of the hemorrhage.
