In situ composite formation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005740

A method for preparing a composite material by forming at least one of its constituent phases in the presence of the other pre-formed phase. For example, inorganic particles are synthesized from molecular precursors within an existing polymer matrix, or a polymer is synthesized within a pre-formed porous inorganic structure. This approach contrasts with mechanical blending, where separately prepared components are physically mixed.
