The host material possesses a layered structure, and the reaction proceeds without major disruption of the host's covalent bonding framework, although the layers may move apart to accommodate the guest. This process is distinct from an insertion reaction, where covalent bonds in the host are broken and reformed; a common example is the intercalation of lithium ions into graphite electrodes.",
