Liquid ion laser

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006679

A liquid laser whose active medium is rare-earth ions, such as neodymium, dissolved in a liquid and optically pumped by a flashlamp or another laser. The solvent is an aprotic inorganic liquid such as selenium oxychloride, because O-H and C-H bonds quench the excited ions. Dye lasers, whose active species are organic dye molecules in solution, form a separate class.
