Long-term potentiation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006767
A persistent enhancement in signal transmission between two neurons that results from their synchronous stimulation. This long-lasting increase in synaptic strength is believed to be a primary cellular mechanism underlying learning and memory. The process is often studied in the hippocampus and involves the activation of NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptors, which leads to an influx of calcium ions and subsequent downstream signaling cascades.
