Maximum tolerated dose

The highest dose of a drug or chemical that can be given to an animal or human without causing unacceptable or life-threatening toxicity. This dose is determined in preclinical and clinical studies to identify a safe and effective dosing range. It is a key parameter in chronic toxicity studies and cancer chemotherapy.
