Virtually safe dose

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012590

A calculated dose of a substance that corresponds to a very low, predetermined level of risk, such as one additional case of cancer in a population of one million over a lifetime. This dose is derived by extrapolating from experimental data, usually from high-dose animal studies, using a mathematical model. The associated risk level is a policy decision and is not a biologically determined threshold of absolute safety.
