Virtual transition
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012589
A liquid-crystal transition lying below the crystallisation temperature of the pure compound, so it never appears on cooling and is located only by extrapolating transition lines measured in binary mixtures. It is a hypothetical, supercooled transition, not one recorded in a single-component sample, and it differs from an observed transition, which shows up as a thermal event on heating or cooling.
