Memory effect

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007170

The dependence of an analytical instrument's reading on one or more previous samples, as when analyte held on inlet lines or walls is released into the next measurement. It matters most in trace gas analysis, where sticky compounds such as ammonia or water vapor bias later readings. The same phrase also names the apparent capacity loss of nickel-cadmium batteries that are recharged after only partial discharge.
