Naphthenic acids
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007766
A complex mixture of carboxylic acids containing at least one cycloalkane ring, such as cyclopentane or cyclohexane, to which a carboxyl group is attached. These compounds are found naturally in crude oil and are responsible for its acidity. Their presence contributes to corrosion in oil refinery equipment, a phenomenon known as naphthenic acid corrosion, which becomes pronounced at temperatures above 220 °C.
