Nozzle-skimmer voltage

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013343

The electric potential difference applied between the exit of an atmospheric pressure ionization source, such as an electrospray needle, and the first skimmer cone in a mass spectrometer. This voltage accelerates ions into the vacuum system, aids in the desolvation process by causing collisions with background gas, and focuses the ion beam. Increasing this potential can induce fragmentation of the ions, a process known as collision-induced dissociation, which provides structural information about the analyte.
