Skimmer
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010928
A conical or plate-like electrode with a central orifice, used in mass spectrometry and other vacuum systems to sample ions or neutral molecules from a region of higher pressure. It is positioned downstream from a sampling orifice and serves to collimate the beam and strip away the boundary layer of the expanding gas jet. In an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer, the skimmer is located between the first and second stages of the differential pumping system.
