Molecular beam mass spectrometry
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007480
A form of mass spectrometry in which the gas to be analyzed is drawn through a small orifice, often by supersonic expansion, and shaped into a narrow beam of neutral molecules that travels into the ion source. Sampling this way stops collisions and reactions in the beam, so short-lived radicals and other reactive intermediates are detected as they existed in the original system. Flame and combustion studies are the classic application.
