Oncofetal antigen

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008231

A protein that is expressed in high concentrations during fetal development, is present at very low levels in healthy adults, but reappears in high concentrations in certain types of cancer cells. These antigens are not typically immunogenic in the host but can serve as tumor markers for diagnosis or monitoring. Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) are two well-known examples.
