Osteoclast
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008358
A large, multinucleated cell responsible for the breakdown and resorption of bone tissue. These cells are derived from hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow and attach to the bone surface to demineralize the matrix by secreting acid and enzymes. The continuous process of bone resorption by osteoclasts is balanced by bone formation from osteoblasts.
