Particle size

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013375

A measure of the physical dimensions of solid or liquid particles suspended in a gas, such as those constituting an aerosol. Because atmospheric particles are often irregularly shaped, their size is expressed as an equivalent diameter, which relates a particle's property (like aerodynamic behavior or volume) to that of a uniform sphere. Particle size distributions are used to classify aerosols, with particles under 2.5 micrometers (PM2.5) being a major focus of air quality regulation.
