Passivation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008527

The process by which a metal or other material becomes less susceptible to corrosion or reaction due to the formation of a protective, often invisible, surface film. This film acts as a barrier, preventing direct contact between the material and its corrosive environment. Common examples include the oxide layers on aluminum and stainless steel.
