Electrode potential
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003671
The voltage of a galvanic cell built from a standard hydrogen electrode as the left half-cell and the electrode of interest as the right half-cell, measured with no current flowing. Because only cell voltages are measurable, an electrode potential is always relative to the hydrogen electrode, and it indicates how strongly the redox couple at that electrode tends to take up or release electrons. The standard electrode potential applies when all species are at unit activity.
