Active state
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000191
A surface site in heterogeneous photocatalysis that is electronically excited, or that holds a charge carrier which light produced and which became trapped, and that reacts with species at the interface to form products or intermediates. In corrosion the active state is the condition in which a metal dissolves by direct transfer of metal ions into the electrolyte, in contrast to the passive state covered by a protective film. The corrosion current of a metal in the active state usually rises as its electrode potential is made more positive.
