A technique in mass spectrometry where the exact mass of an unknown ion is determined by comparing its mass-to-charge ratio with that of a known reference ion. Both ions are measured simultaneously or in rapid succession under identical conditions. This method provides highly accurate mass measurements, often to within a few parts per million.
